This gene is a member of the CLC family of voltage-gated chloride channels. The gene is located adjacent to a highly similar chloride channel gene on chromosome 4. This gene is syntenic with human CLCNKB (geneID:1188). Multiple alternatively spliced variants, encoding the same protein, have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009]

Voltage-gated chloride channel. Chloride channels have several functions including the regulation of cell volume; membrane potential stabilization, signal transduction and transepithelial transport. May be important in urinary concentrating mechanisms. May be the basolateral chloride channel mediating net chloride absorption in CTAL cells.
