NCBI Summary for Atp7a
This gene encodes a transmembrane protein that functions in copper transport across membranes. The protein localizes to the trans-Golgi network, where it is predicted to supply copper to copper-dependent enzymes in the secretory pathway. The protein relocalizes to the plasma membrane under conditions of elevated extracellular copper and functions in the efflux of copper from cells. In human, mutations in this gene result in Menkes disease, X-linked cutis laxa, and occipital horn syndrome. [provided by RefSeq, Nov 2009]
UniProt Comments for Atp7a
May supply copper to copper-requiring proteins within the secretory pathway, when localized in the trans-Golgi network. Under conditions of elevated extracellular copper, it relocalized to the plasma membrane where it functions in the efflux of copper from cells ().
Research Articles on Atp7a
1. CTR1 and ATP7A play important roles in Cu transport in choroidal epithelial cells, and the Pb-induced intracellular Cu accumulation appears to be mediated, at least in part, via the alteration of CTR1 and ATP7A expression levels following Pb exposure.
