Function: One gap junction consists of a cluster of closely packed pairs of transmembrane channels, the connexons, through which materials of low MW diffuse from one cell to a neighboring cell.
Subunit structure: A connexon is composed of a hexamer of connexins. During early stages of lens development, interacts with the C-terminus of MIP. Ref.5
Subcellular location: Cell membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein. Cell junction › gap junction.
Post-translational modification: Proteolytically cleaved by caspase-3 during lens development. Ref.4Phosphorylated on Ser-364; which inhibits cleavage by caspase-3. Ref.3 Ref.4
Sequence similarities: Belongs to the connexin family. Alpha-type (group II) subfamily.
Research Articles on GJA8
1. Results suggest that both caspase-1 and -3 are responsible for the cleavage at the C terminus of connexin 50 (Cx50) during lens development.
