UniProt Comments for Casq1
calsequestrin 1: Calsequestrin is a high-capacity, moderate affinity, calcium-binding protein and thus acts as an internal calcium store in muscle. The release of calcium bound to calsequestrin through a calcium release channel triggers muscle contraction. The skeletal muscle isoform (CASQ1) binds around 80 Ca(2+) ions, while the cardiac isoform (CASQ2) binds approximately 60 Ca(2+). Belongs to the calsequestrin family.
Protein type: Calcium-binding; Mitochondrial
Cellular Component: I band; Golgi apparatus; sarcoplasmic reticulum membrane; sarcoplasmic reticulum lumen; intracellular membrane-bound organelle; mitochondrion; sarcoplasmic reticulum; myofibril; T-tubule; mitochondrial matrix; cytoplasm; intracellular; sarcolemma
Molecular Function: calcium ion binding
Biological Process: protein polymerization; response to organic substance; regulation of skeletal muscle contraction via regulation of the release of sequestered calcium ion; endoplasmic reticulum organization and biogenesis; skeletal muscle development; regulation of sequestering of calcium ion; response to heat; response to denervation involved in regulation of muscle adaptation; sarcomere organization; response to muscle inactivity
Research Articles on Casq1
1. In EDL muscle, CSQ1 provides a large total pool of releasable Ca2+ in the SR whilst maintaining free [Ca2+] in the SR at sufficiently low levels that Ca2+ leakage through the high density of SERCA1 pumps does not metabolically compromise muscle function.
